Dr. Jaguanana "Jag" Lathan
CEO and Founder of New Generation Equity
Jaguanana “Jag” Lathan, Ed.D, grew up in Oakland, California, where her journey in education began with personal experiences that profoundly shaped her perspective. As a student in the K-12 system, she witnessed stark disparities between classrooms, schools and districts—inequities that sparked a deep desire to create learning environments that were not only equitable but also filled with joy and community. Dr. Jag envisioned schools where all students, regardless of background, could rise to high expectations with the support and resources needed to succeed. She sought to make education a pathway to improving the quality of life for students and their families.
This vision has been the foundation of Dr. Jag’s over two-decade career as an educational equity leader. With a blend of experience in teaching, administration, executive coaching, serving as an elected school board member, and systems design, Dr. Jag’s mission is to transform educational systems from the inside out. She works closely with leaders in education, nonprofit, and government sectors to build or strengthen organizational infrastructures that are rooted in equity. Her approach is grounded in equity-conscious design principles, effective implementation strategies, and the use of feedback loops to ensure continuous improvement. Dr. Jag believes that transformational change comes from working together with leaders and teams to create systems that are just, equitable, and liberating for all.
“Effective equity work doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It’s the result of systems design.”
Dr. Jag’s academic credentials include a Doctorate and Master’s in Educational Leadership from Mills College, a Master’s in Special Education from National University, and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from San Francisco State University. Her extensive work across some of California’s smallest and largest public-school districts and County Offices of Education has solidified her expertise in equity leadership and systems redesign, positioning her as a trusted leader in the field.
When she’s not leading transformative initiatives, Jag enjoys exploring the outdoors through hiking, traveling to new destinations, and spending quality time with family and friends.
